NEW CITROËN C4. POSITIVE ENERGY

Attractive sculpted lines. Remarkable quality of finish. An array of original, upmarket features and functions designed to meet the needs not only of consumers, but also business users on the look-out for progress. The new CITROËN C4 radiates positive energy. Like the new CITROËN C5 in 2008 and the new CITROËN C3 en 2009, the new CITROËN C4 once more illustrates the Marque’s know-how and creativity in design, innovation and technology.

The new CITROËN C4 is a source of energy for all its passengers,

  • saving energy: versions featuring e-HDi micro-hybrid technology and latest-generation Stop & Start are available, emitting 109 g/km of CO2 at launch, subsequently falling to 99 g/km. The micro-hybrid arrangement also includes new MICHELIN ENERGY? Saver tyres, premiered with CITROËN, designed for very low levels of fuel consumption and helping to cut CO2 emissions by more than 5 g/km. By using intelligent design techniques, CITROËN was able to keep down the weight of the new CITROËN C4 and to include 15% of green materials, a record for the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group.
  • delivering a positive impression of safety: the new CITROËN C4 includes features that are unique in its market segment, such as a blind spot monitoring system, a programmable speed limiter and cruise control, and the innovative CITROËN eTouch service. This service includes, among other functions, a localised emergency and breakdown call system. A simple and efficient way to promote safety.
  • setting high standards in comfort: to ensure that passengers make the most of their time on board, the new CITROËN C4 has opted for particularly comfortable seats, with electric lumbar adjustment and a massage function for passengers in the front. It also sports a customised onboard ambience (colours of the instrument cluster, choice of polyphonic, ringtone-like chimes, intensity of the air conditioning) and a 230V socket. All these features are new to the compact hatchback market.

Produced at the Mulhouse plant in France, the new CITROËN C4 will join the CITROËN range before the end of the year. For maximum reliability, the car will be driven for more than two million kilometres prior to launch. .

MEETING THE HIGHEST EXPECTATIONS
“We are unveiling an all-new CITROËN C4. This car is the result of a top-down review during which we set our sights even higher than before, just as we did for the CITROËN C3 and C5. We aim to keep the surprises coming.” Thomas d’Haussy, Head of Product Development at CITROËN.

Elegant and dynamic, rational and versatile, reassuring and modern. The new CITROËN C4 sets new standards on the compact hatchback market.

With added elegance

The new CITROËN C4 boasts assertive styling, a quality that has always ranked among the Marque’s main strengths. The impression of strength and stability is immediate from first glance, illustrated by the car’s balanced proportions and the positioning of the body, sitting close to the wheels. The sculpted lines and black rear spoiler further illustrate the quest to optimise aerodynamics.

At the front, the ribbed bonnet curves out towards the sides, the headlights flow into the side wings, and the grille becomes larger while keeping its double chevron badge. A side view shows two intersecting style lines and strongly raked quarter windows, underlining the dynamic looks of the new CITROËN C4. At the rear, new chevrons and an original lighting signature highlight the clean lines of the tailgate and emphasise the prestige design of this compact hatchback.

The attention brought to gap and flush, the touches of chrome (front and rear bumpers, weather strips, etc.) and the shape of the diamond-tipped alloy wheels enhance the body styling. A multitude of details showcase and underline the elegant and stylish personality of the new CITROËN C4.

The new CITROËN C4 thus sets new standards in perceived quality. At the same time, the new vehicle ships with a choice of ten body colours, along with generously sized wheels of between 15” and 18” in diameter.

Like the exterior, the interior styling of the new CITROËN C4 creates an immediate impression of quality and sophistication. The presentation is luxurious and well thought-out, with a horizontal dashboard of airy lines and a made-to-measure central fascia grouping the audio system and air conditioning controls in a single part with no visible join, ensuring a perfect fit with the contours of the dashboard.

Showcasing the cabin to subtle effect, the new CITROËN C4 uses best-in-class materials, such as slush skin (with a soft, supple feel) for the dashboard, closely moulded to the air vents and instrument cluster, jersey fabric for the roof lining, and chrome detailing on the steering wheel controls, air vents and gear lever.

Looking beyond styling and quality, drivers expect ergonomic driving aids. The driving position on new C4 reflects CITROËN’s creative talent and responds to this need. The design is optimised: the instrument cluster is directly in front of the driver, so all the controls fall easily to hand:
- A new instrument cluster with three dials combines analogue and digital information. The readout plays on depth and contrast to ensure exceptional legibility.
- A new carefully designed steering wheel with centralised controls grouping the many functions in clearly defined areas (audio, telephone, speed limiter-cruise control, comfort).

The end of compromises

Space and size, versatility and user-friendly design, the new CITROËN C4 has it all.

First, it is an illustration of optimised hatchback design:

  • The dimensions are compact, in line with key criteria in this market segment: 4.33 m long (an increase of 5 cm), 1.79 m wide (an increase of 2 cm) and 1.49m tall (an increase of 3 cm).
  • Accessibility and interior space are also optimised with, in particular, more head room at the rear.
  • The boot sets a new market standard: the biggest in its class (up to 408 litres), it features a cubic shape, low, slim load sill and interior fittings to ensure that all the space available can be used.

To carry everyday objects and contribute to onboard comfort, the CITROËN C4 also sets the standard for storage. The cabin includes a host of roomy, ingenious storage compartments: a vast lighted glovebox, door bins that can contain bottles of up to 1.5 litres at the front, a drawer under the front seats, storage in the central fascia and, more particularly –a new feature – a high, wide central console with four distinct storage areas. The most innovative of these storage areas is multifunctional, cooled, lighted at the front and closed by a blind. It can hold up to four 50-cl bottles and also includes a sliding drawer ideally placed in front of the onboard connectors. The second main area of this console is under the front armrest. It is designed to hold CDs and also includes a 230V socket.

Available with the clutchless manual gearbox, this high central console is a real innovation, never before seen on the compact hatchback market. Coupled with a selector that is a real ‘jewel’, and an electric parking brake, it reorganises the cabin for a truly modern drive. Providing far more than storage areas and a central armrest, it delivers a new automotive experience. The benefits are twofold: easier, more relaxed driving, and a more enjoyable ride for all.

Road feel specific to CITROËN

Both the driver and passengers feel immediately at ease in the new CITROËN C4. Handling reflects the vehicle specifications and is faithful to the road feel characteristic of CITROËN vehicles. This is reflected in the emphasis placed on safety, always a priority, and in the ability to combine real driving pleasure with the highest standards in ride comfort. Ideal for easy handling by the driver.

The new CITROËN C4 features MacPherson type front suspension, new rear suspension with a flexible transverse beam, and hydraulic steering with an electric pump. These proven features are a perfect fit with the vehicle characteristics, working together to deliver impeccable road feel. The CITROËN C4 also features excellent roll control and shows sharp reactions, notably in avoidance or emergency manoeuvres. This creates a perceptible impression of easy driving for the driver, who feels in full control of the vehicle.

The running gear features suspension settings tailored to the power and torque of the engines. This result was achieved by redefining the flexibility of the springs and the stiffness of the anti-roll bars, as well as by implementing new damping control settings associated with the “all-Michelin” tyres. This creates a level of onboard comfort never before experienced in this segment.

The well balanced handling is reinforced by driving aids such as electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency braking assistance and smart traction control coupled with ESP. Looking beyond handling, onboard safety is one of the many strong points of the new CITROËN C4, which received five stars in EuroNCAP tests. Alongside its energy-dissipating structure, it has six airbags (driver, front passenger, side and curtain).

Quality in every detail

All these high-quality functions are encompassed in the design and production of the new CITROËN C4. The car therefore meets high standards of quality, both new and in use.

To achieve this result, the CITROËN C4 uses the latest industrial technologies such as body assembly by laser welding, a first for the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group. With this industrial innovation, the roof joint becomes invisible on the new CITROËN C4.

The new CITROËN C4 is manufactured in France at the PSA Peugeot CITROËN site in Mulhouse, a plant with ISO 14001 certification. The production process complies with the Marque’s quality requirements in every respect. For maximum reliability, the car will also be driven for more than two million kilometres prior to launch.

SIMPLICITY AND APPEAL, DAY BY DAY

"For the new CITROËN C4, we developed intuitive technologies that can be used every day, to make life easier. We placed particular emphasis on all aspects of life on board, comfort and relaxation. Today, rather than focusing on speed, people want to take full advantage of the time spent travelling by car." Jérémie Maestracci, C4 Project Manager.

For the Marque, the new CITROËN C4 is a concentrate of technologies whose use was self-evident. This is a car that places the emphasis on useful innovation and intuitive use, in terms of safety, comfort and space. Looking beyond recognised technologies such as hill start assist, the electric parking brake, the LDWS (lane departure warning system), Xenon dual-function directional headlamps, parking assist and parking space ‘gap’ measurement, the new CITROËN C4 also boasts new features never before seen in this segment.

Intelligent innovations for a more relaxed drive

The new CITROËN C4 includes a range of features designed to improve the safety not only of the driver and passengers, but also of other road users:

  • a blind spot monitoring system using ultrasound technology, unique on the market. When this innovative function detects a vehicle in a blind spot, it informs the driver by means of an orange diode positioned in the angle of the door mirror. Comprising four sensors in the front and rear bumpers, this system is active at between 12 km/h and 140 km/h. It monitors the area from the front door mirror to a spot some 5 m behind the rear bumper and up to 3.5 m on either side.
  • a programmable speed limiter and cruise control. The driver can memorise up to five speed settings and restore them easily when speed limits change on the road.
  • front fog lamps with static cornering lighting. An original feature in the CITROËN range. These headlamps provide a second light source inside bends and thus increase visibility and safety on corners and intersections. They can be activated in two ways: when the indicators are turned on or when the steering wheel is at an angle of 60°. The fog lamp can thus illuminate an area of up to 75° on the right or left of the vehicle.
  • the new innovative CITROËN eTouch. A full range of onboard services including localised emergency and breakdown calls (depending on the country), two free services available 24/7. An integrated SIM card makes sure that the vehicle can be located with precision, in the event of an incident or accident, so that emergency services can reach the scene quickly. Two other services are also available on the web: a virtual service book and Eco Driving service. These services warn the driver in the event of a mechanical or safety incident, inform him/her of upcoming servicing operations, and also monitor fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

“Créative Technologie” for business-class travel

The new CITROËN C4 is designed for business-class travel, with its welcoming, comfortable seats. They are available with lumbar adjustment for maximum support and, for a more relaxed ride, an electric lumbar massage function for the driver and front passenger. A feature that is new to the compact hatchback market.

Acoustic treatment was also a priority in delivering exceptional standards of onboard comfort. The soundproofing of the new CITROËN C4 is similar to that of the latest CITROËN vehicles, the C5 in particular. Vibrations, engine noise, aerodynamic noise, driving and impact noise are all damped to provide a quiet ambience in the cabin. To achieve this, soundproofing and damping focused on the sources of noise emission or excitation:

  • the acoustic laminated windscreen includes a damping film,
  • a sealing concept was implemented, comprising a peripheral barrier on the body, a barrier on the door and an exterior barrier,
  • absorbent materials were placed in the engine compartment.

The audio system also makes a major contribution to comfort and relaxed driving. The new CITROËN C4 features new sound spatialisation technology. Sound spatialisation positions the ‘sound scene’ opposite the driver or all the passengers for maximum listening comfort. This system reproduces voice timbre more faithfully, emits more powerful low notes and distributes sound more effectively around the cabin. For passengers who wish to enjoy an even more exciting musical experience, a new executive hi-fi system developed in partnership with Denon is available as an option with the third level of trim. Using an amplified subwoofer in the boot, it takes in-car sound to an even higher level of excellence.

The new CITROËN C4 adapts to suit all customers. It features a range of equipment that can be tailored to individual tastes in order to customise the onboard ambience. Drivers can choose from four types of polyphonic ‘ringtones’ (Classic, Crystal Symphony, Jungle Fantasy, Urban Rythmik) to hear the side repeaters and warning signals. They can also select one of three possible levels of intensity for the air conditioning (low, medium, high) and define the colour of the instrument cluster (from white to blue).

Further, for improved safety and comfort, the new CITROËN C4 boasts a large glazed area. The bright and airy ambience created by the wide windscreen can be further enhanced by a 1.3 m² panoramic sunroof, available from the second level of trim.

A well connected hatchback

The new CITROËN C4 ships with a host of connections, some of which are new to the compact hatchback market, such as the 230V socket ingeniously housed in the tall central console. A feature that is ideal, and even essential for business users.

This multi-connection vehicle also includes a USB port, jack and 12V socket, all located on the front of the central console and illuminated by a light source on the central fascia. A 12V jack is also available in the boot. All these solutions, positioned within easy reach, contribute to high standards of comfort for both the driver and passengers.

The new CITROËN C4 can be equipped with a built-in new-generation navigation system with a large colour screen. This navigation system, eMyWay, includes a high-resolution colour display, an internal memory, a USB connection compatible with all MP3 players, a speed limit display, and Bluetooth audio streaming to let the driver listen to music stored on his/her mobile phone.
